The care of ventilator-dependent patients has been a primary focus of RML Specialty Hospital since our founding in 1987. RML continures to make advancements in ventilator weaning and today treats more ventilator patients than any other facility in the nation. Our dedicated team of board-certified pulmonologists work with our registered nurses; respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapists; and nutritionists to rebuild a patient's strength and stamina. To help manage the fears and anxieties sometimes associated with weaning, our clinical psychologists work with patients in building their confidence and courage. These specialists come together to bring a holistic course of treatment to our ventilator patients — one that prepares them to breathe independently when they are ready, both physically and mentally, to do so. Our approach has led to many positive results in reducing and, in many cases, discontinuing patients' dependence on mechanical ventilators. The future holds much promise for even greater accomplishments. RML is the largest contributor to a number of clinical research studies that are paving the way for considerable improvements in ventilator weaning. The studies, some of which have already indicated significant preliminary results explore quality of life issues, long-term outcomes, and patient anxiety levels as factors in successful weaning. |
