Hospital-level Care for Medically Complex Recovery
When a patient no longer needs intensive care but still requires close medical oversight, recovery often continues in a hospital setting. RML Specialty Hospital provides long-term acute care services for adults with complex medical needs so care does not pause during a critical phase of recovery.
This page offers an overview of the hospital-level care available at RML and helps you explore the programs and services that may be appropriate for your situation.
Care That Continues When Recovery Takes More Time
Recovery after critical illness is rarely linear. Many patients leave the ICU still requiring daily medical management, close monitoring, and coordinated treatment across multiple specialties.
RML is a licensed long-term acute care hospital (LTCH) designed specifically for this stage of recovery. We provide continued hospital-level care for patients who are too medically complex for rehabilitation, skilled nursing, or home care, supporting recovery at a pace guided by medical need.
When Hospital-level Care is Needed
Care at RML supports patients who:
-
Are recovering from critical illness and still need hospital-level treatment.
-
Require daily physician oversight and reassessment of medical plan as needed.
-
Have multiple or interacting medical conditions.
-
Need coordinated care across respiratory, neurologic, infectious, cardiac, or other systems.
-
Are not yet ready for rehabilitation, nursing home, or discharge home.
Patients often arrive at RML following an ICU or acute-care hospital stay, when recovery is underway—but far from complete.

How Care Works at RML
Care at RML is led by physicians and interdisciplinary teams experienced in managing medically complex recovery.
Each patient is assigned an attending physician who oversees care throughout the hospital stay. Depending on the patient’s medical needs, this physician may be a pulmonologist, physiatrist, or another board-certified physician with relevant clinical expertise.
Patients also receive coordinated support from specialized clinical teams as needed, including:
-
Infectious disease specialists, with Board Certified infectious disease physicians and physician assistants involved in care.
-
Nursing teams experienced high-acuity, long-term hospital care.
-
Respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, integrated into the care plan.
-
Psychological and spiritual care providers, supporting emotional and mental well-being.
Care plans are individualized, reviewed regularly, and adjusted as conditions change. Medical oversight is continuous, with 24/7 on-site physician presence to support timely decision-making and patient safety.
